11/23/2023 0 Comments War zone albuquerqueThe warzone is in an area of economic development that is considered less optimal because it’s near businesses, near the college and many of the buildings are older are higher cost to maintain and rent. Same reason other city’s have an area similar to this. Violent crime was a problem as well, with 34 homicides recorded in southeast Albuquerque in 1996 (more than half of the city's total) and 11 in Trumbull Village alone. A 1991 article from the Albuquerque Journal described East Central as "a loose-jointed carnival of sex, drugs and booze" with drug dealers and prostitutes operating openly. However, the neighborhood also attracted a significant amount of criminal activity, which led to its notoriety as the "War Zone" by the late 1980s. The International District's abundance of low-cost motels and apartments made it a landing place for immigrants and other newcomers to the city, including refugees from Southeast Asia (especially Vietnam) and later Central America. In the 1960s, the area struggled economically after Kirtland transferred much of its personnel to on-base housing and Interstate 40 took most of the long-haul traffic away from Route 66. BTW, these kids universally called it the "war zone" not the "International District". Consequently, I believe that crime in that area is grossly underreported and that crime statistics would be even worse if they called the police at the drop of a hat like people in the NE heights do. The stories they shared about what it's like in their neighborhoods were horrifying, and they laughed at me when I asked if they had called the police. Also, a few years ago, I taught at a charter school that served a lot of students from this area. Of course these aren't all violent crimes, but it's still something that warranted sending out the police. Typically, there are no stick pins at all east of Eubank but they are pretty dense to the west. This makes it very apparent that the area south I40 and west of Wyoming is still high crime compared to other areas. It displays pins on a map that you can click on for details. This area is quiet and safe, but I still use a crime tracking app that is hooked into the APD records. I live south of Southern between Juan Tabo and Eubank. Breaking up the grid of streets with barriers and speed humps seemed to largely mitigate that particular problem, but the area still has a disproportionate amount of crime. The name was coined during a period of what seemed to be an actual gang war with innumerable drive by shootings.
